General description

Petroleum ether is the petroleum fraction, consisting of C5 and C6 hydrocarbons (Pentanes and hexanes are the major constituents), commonly used as a laboratory solvent due to its low boiling point and non-polar characteristics.

Application

Petroleum ether can be used as a solvent for extracting:
  • Non-polar compounds from various samples, such as plant materials or organic mixtures.
  • Carotenoids from the marine Thraustochytrium sp. ONC-T18.
