General description

Poloxamer 188 (P188) is a non-ionic amphiphilic copolymer. It comprises a central chain of hydrophobic polyoxypropylene flanked at ends by hydrophilic polyoxyethylene.

Application

A nonionic copolymer surfactant

Biochem/physiol Actions

Poloxamer 188 (P188) elicits hemorheological, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective activities. It restores and stabilizes membrane barrier function. P188 also inhibits lipid peroxidation, reduces surface tension and hydrophobic-based cellular adherence. P-188 exhibits low toxicity and may be used in oral drug delivery.
