General description

Calcium carbide (CaC2), also referred to as calcium acetylide, is an ionic compound. Technical grade CaC2 is a grey solid with a granular form. The material is reactive with water and forms acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide. Our technical grade material consists of ≥75% CaC2 with the remainder of the composition being calcium oxide, phosphides, sulfides, and nitrides. CaC2 is extensively utilized in the production of acetylene and calcium cyanamide. Additionally, it has been explored in producing phase change materials and as a shape-stabilized phase change material for the efficient utilization of solar energy. Furthermore, it is being investigated as an electrode material for rechargeable calcium batteries.

Application

  • NUCLEOPHILIC ADDITION OF PHOSPHINOXIDES AND ALCOHOLS TO ACETYLENE GENERATED in situ FROM CALCIUM CARBIDE: This study discusses the reactivity of acetylene generated from calcium carbide for various organic synthesis applications (Aleksandrovna, 2024).
  • Construction of 3-Methyl-2-Substituted Benzofurans and 3-Methyl-2-Substituted Benzothiophenes Using Solid Calcium Carbide as a Substitute for Gaseous …: Describes a synthetic method using solid calcium carbide in organic synthesis, highlighting its practicality and environmental benefits (Wang et al., 2024).
