Fatty acid binding protein 6 (FABP6) is localized in the cytosol of cells in the intestine extending from the jejunum to the ascending colon. It is a 15kDa protein belonging to the fatty acid-binding protein family (FABP family).

生化/生理作用

Fatty acid binding protein 6 (FABP6) is involved in binding and transporting bile acids. It is a part of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) transcription pathway which responds to bile acids and regulates their reabsorption across the ileum. It also enhances the transcriptional activity of FXR. Bile acids that are secreted in the small intestine are reabsorbed in the ileum. They activate the nuclear FXR and this in turn stimulates the expression of FABP6. The interaction between FXR and FABP6 causes a local increase in bile acid concentration around the ligand-binding domain (LBD) of FXR. This aids the delivery of ligands to the LBD.
