Analysis Note

Methylphenobarbital (also known as mephobarbital and mephobarbitone) is a barbiturate derivative used primarily as an anticonvulsant, but also as a sedative and anxiolytic. It is a chiral compound and the enantiomers have been shown to exhibit different bioactivity, one narcotic, one convulsant, neither of which is seen in the racemate. Shown here is the rapid, efficient separation of methylphenobarbital enantiomers on an Astec CHIROBIOTIC V column. Highest grade HPLC solvents were used to supply low background interference and low particulate contamination for robust, trouble-free operation. A Sigma-Aldrich USP reference standard provided reliable identification and quantification.
