General description

Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11), also known as bone morphogenetic protein 11 (BMP11) is a member of the BMP/transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily. GDF11 consists of a signaling sequence, an RXXR proteolytic processing site, and a conserved cysteine-containing a C-terminal end.[1] It is expressed in several tissues associated with the kidney, pancreas, retina, and nervous system. GDF11 plays an important role in embryonic development, brain function, and signal transduction. It is involved in tumor suppression of breast and liver cancer cells.[1]
