Escherichia coli heat-STb is an important cause of diarrhea in piglets. STb was shown to interact specifically with sulfatide (3'-sulfogalactosyl-ceramide) present on the surface of epithelial cells of piglet jejunum. Basic data are lacking on STb binding to sulfatide in

Cryptonemia seminervis biosynthesizes a family of D,L-hybrid galactans based on the classical 3-linked beta-D-galactopyranosyl-->4-linked alpha-D- and alpha-L-galactopyranosyl alternating sequence (A-units-->B-units) with major amounts of alpha-D- and alpha-L-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-D- and L-galactose and lesser percentages of 3,6-anhydro-2-O-methyl-L-galactose, 2-O-methyl-, 4-O-methyl- and 6-O-methylgalactoses.

A combination of two reported procedures was used in order to determine the configuration of the 3,6-anhydrogalactose present in red seaweed polysaccharides. A mild hydrolysis (to cleave only 3,6-anhydrogalactosyl linkages) was followed by a reductive amination with a chiral amine.
