General description

17β(H),21β(H)-Hopanes belong to the hopanes family of hydrocarbons which are known as the biomarkers of petroleum products.

Application

17β(H),21β(H)-Hopane may be used as an internal injection standard (IIS) for the determination of triterpanes in riverine, estuarine, and marine sediments in Thailand and in stranded tar-balls on the coasts of Peninsular Malaysia by gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Hydroxyl radical (OH) uptake by organic aerosols, followed by heterogeneous oxidation, happens nearly at the collision frequency. Oxidation complicates the use of organic molecular markers such as hopanes for source apportionment, since receptor models assume markers are stable during transport.
