General description
Whatman PTFE membranes from Cytiva are strong hydrophobic membrane filters resistant to the corrosive solvents and aggressive media used in gas sterilization* and liquid clarification.
PTFE membranes are especially effective for use with aggressive solvents, liquids, and gases.
Gas sterilization and liquid clarification
PTFE membranes are used for liquid clarification of corrosives, solvents, and aggressive fluids. Effective sample filtration is critical to prevent equipment damage. Cytiva′s PTFE hydrophobic membrane filters are also suitable for air and gas sterilization* because of their ability to capture aqueous aerosols.

Application
One of the major applications for the PTFE membrane is the clarification of corrosives, solvents, and aggressive fluids. This includes the important requirement in HPLC analysis for sample filtration where any solid particles can cause permanent damage to the column. The 0.5 μm pore size is normally used. Air and gas sterilization make use of the hydrophobic characteristics of PTFE membranes and their ability to stop aqueous aerosols. Usual pore sizes are 0.2 μm and 0.5 μm. Sterile venting of vacuum manifolds, fermentation vessels, and sterile filtrate tanks and containers utilize PTFE 0.2 μm membranes.
Features and Benefits
- Polypropylene grid support material for increased strength
- Temperature resistant up to 120°C
- Resistant to most aggressive acids, alkalis, and solvents
- Hydrophobic membrane filters can collect aqueous aerosols
