General description

Polyethyleneimine is a hydrophilic polymerwidely used as a non-viral synthetic vector for invivo delivery of therapeutic nucleic acids. Owing to its excellentphysicochemical properties, it is applied in many fields like the separationand purification of proteins, carbon dioxide absorption, drug carriers, effluent treatment, and biological labels.

Application

Branched PEI can be used as a precursor to synthesize conjugated polyplexes for efficient gene transfection. Conjugation of PEI with Jeffamine polyether and guanidinylation of the amino groups of PEI reduce the cytotoxicity of the polyplexes and protect them from aggregation in the presence of serum proteins.

Bamboo charcoal impregnated with PEI can be used as a CO2 adsorbent. Numerous amino groups present in PEI can react with CO2 due to acid-alkali interaction and enhance the adsorption capacity of bamboo charcoal.

It can also be used to prepare cross-linked water-soluble polymers with high coordination capabilities towards organic drug molecules.

Features and Benefits

  • Branched PEI has better complexation and buffering capacity.
  • High ion exchange capacity and affinity toward proteins.
  • SignificantDNA transfer efficiency.

Enzymes are biological catalysts that are comprised of small-molecule, metal, or cluster catalysts augmented by biopolymeric scaffolds. It is conceivable that early in chemical evolution, ancestral enzymes opted for simpler, easier to assemble scaffolds. Herein, we describe such possible protoenzymes:

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. 1) What is the maximum wt % absorption of CO2 relative to the weight of PEI 2) Does PEI liquid absorb CO2 by surface absorption/adhesion - or by diffusion into the fluid?

    1 answer
    1. Theoretically, it’s about equal amounts of CO2 and PEI by mass. The effective monomeric unit of the PEI is the (-CH2CH2NH-) group, with a formula weight of 43.07. The formula weight of carbon dioxide is 44.01. Each monomeric unit of the PEI can react with one molecule of CO2, and since 43.07 is so close to 44.01, the weight of the PEI and the CO2 would be almost the same. Practically speaking, the reaction is probably not 100% efficient.
The PEI absorbs the CO2 by a chemical reaction…an acid-base reaction. Carbon dioxide in aqueous solution is sometimes referred to as carbonic acid. (CO2 + H2O ---> H2CO3) And the amino groups of the PEI are the base. The reaction product is a protonated amine (-NH3 + or -NHR2 +) with a bicarbonate anion (HCO3 - ) as the counterion.

  4. Is this product soluble in water ?

    1 answer
    1. This material is readily soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and n-propanol. In addition, the product is partially soluble in ethyl acetate, toluene, and xylene. Other sources report that this PEI is also soluble in chloroform.

  5. What is the percentage of Polyethylenimine in the solution?

    1 answer
    1. This product is considered a neat/pure material. It just happens to be a liquid at room temperature, but it is not in solution; there is no solvent added.

  6. What is the n value in the structure of this PEI?

    1 answer
    1. The n value in the structure is not determined.

  7. What's the molar ratio of primary, secondary and tertiary amines?

    1 answer
    1. The molar ratio of the primary, secondary, and tertiary amines is not determined. However, the amine value is approximately 576 (primary and secondary). This product is PEI800 and equivalent to Lupasol FG.
See the link below for a paper that suggests a general amine ratio (Table 6):
