Gene Information

human ... SLC2A4(6517)

General description

Solute carrier family 2 member 4 (SLC2A4) is also known as glucose transporter-4 (GLUT4). It is highly expressed in adipose tissue and skeletal muscles. The gene encoding SLC2A4 is localized on human chromosome 17p13.

Immunogen

Peptide with sequence TELEYLGPDEND, from the C-terminal region of the protein sequence according to NP_001033.1

Biochem/physiol Actions

Solute carrier family 2 member 4 (SLC2A4) transports glucose into cells in response to insulin. Levels of this protein have been shown to be reduced in type 2 diabetes.

Decreased glucose tolerance and diabetes are frequently observed in advanced liver cirrhosis patients and may be related to insulin resistance. Glucose transporter-4 (GLUT4), one of the most important glucose transporters, plays a key role in the development of type 2

Glucose uptake by heart, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue is acutely regulated by insulin, which stimulates facilitative glucose transport, at least in part, by promoting the translocation of transporters from an intracellular pool to the plasma membrane. cDNAs encoding the
