MCP-induced protein 1 (also known as ribonuclease ZC3H12A, Zinc finger CCCH domain-containing protein 12A) is encoded by the ZC3H12A gene in human (also known as dJ423B22.1, MCPIP, MCPIP1). It belongs to the 4-member CCCH-zinc finger protein family (MCPIP1/2/3/4) that act as negative regulators in macrophage activation (PMID 18178554). MCPIP1 in particular is involved in immune response downregulation upon LPS treatment by targeting IL-6 and IL-12b with its RNase activity (PMID 22561375). MCPIP1 expresssion by MCP-1 treatment is reported to promote angiogenesis in human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) cultures, while causing apoptotic cell death in cardiac myocytes (PMID 18364357 & 16574901).
