BRG1-associated factor 180 (BAF180) is a subunit of the SWI/SNF-B (PBAF) chromatin remodeling complex, and is known to contain 6 bromo domains, 2 BAH domains, and a single HMG box DNA-binding domain. BAF180 has a critical and active role in the transcriptional activation and repression of specific genes via chromatin remodeling, including genes involved in the development of the heart, thus suggesting a role in mammalian development. Recent studies demonstrate BAF180 to suppress tumorigenesis through its ability to regulate both baseline and signal-dependent p21 transcription by its binding of the p21 promoter. Expression of BAF180 is reported in a wide range of tissues.

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare, aggressive disease that predominantly afflicts individuals of African or Mediterranean descent with sickle cell trait. RMC comprises 1% of all renal cell carcinoma diagnoses with a median overall survival of 13 months. Patients are
PBRM1, a component of the chromatin remodeller SWI/SNF, is often deleted or mutated in human cancers, most prominently in renal cancers. Core components of the SWI/SNF complex have been shown to be important for the cellular response to hypoxia. Here
Polybromo-1 (PBRM1) is an important tumor suppressor in kidney cancer. It contains six tandem bromodomains (BDs), which are specialized structures that recognize acetyl-lysine residues. While BD2 has been found to bind acetylated histone H3 lysine 14 (H3K14ac), it is not

A critical component of gene regulation is recognition of histones and their post-translational modifications by transcription-associated proteins or complexes. Although many histone-binding reader modules have been characterized, the bromo-adjacent homology (BAH) domain family of readers is still poorly characterized. A
BET proteins commonly activate cellular gene expression, yet inhibiting their recruitment paradoxically reactivates latent HIV-1 transcription. Here we identify the short isoform of BET family member BRD4 (BRD4S) as a corepressor of HIV-1 transcription. We found that BRD4S was enriched in
