General description

Ammonium carbonate is an ammonium salt. It is colorless and is composed of water soluble cubic crystals. It can be synthesized by reacting carbon dioxide with ammonia. It is widely employed as a CO2 source in fire extinguishers.[1] Calorimetric estimation of enthalpies of absorption of CO2 in aqueous solutions of ammonium carbonate in the temperature range of 35-80°C have been reported.[2]
Ammonium carbonate is commonly used in producing ammonium sulfate as a fertilizer. It is formed by the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide.[3] Ammonium carbonate is also the principal ingredient of smelling salts because of its characteristic strong ammonia odor.[4]

Application

Ammonium carbonate has been used as a reducing agent in the preparation of an iron-catalyst for supercritical Fischer Tropsch synthesis (SC-FTS).[5][6] It may also be used in the hydrometallurgical extraction of zinc, copper and nickel.
Ammonium carbonate may be employed in the following studies:
  • Preparation of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one and 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives, via Biginelli and Hantzsch reactions.[7]
  • Preparation of ammonium carbonate buffer.[8]
  • Synthesis of dihyropyridones derivatives.[9]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. 3. What is the solubility of ammonium carbonate and ammonium carbonate mono hydrate in water as a function of temperature in the range of 0-40C?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of this product in water has not been determined. However, various sources state the material is soluble in water at 0.1g/mL at 25°C. This has not been validated. See the links below to the PubChem listing for each compound. Additional information cited here may be helpful.
