General description

Dimethyl isophthalate belongs to the class of phthalates, which are widely used as plasticizers to make hard plastics more flexible. They are utilized in a variety of products including cosmetics, detergents, lubricating oils, solvents, polychlorinated biphenyl substitutes, carriers in pesticide formulations, building products such as flooring, sheeting, films, personal care products, medical devices, food packaging and toys. Exposure to phthalates is inevitable due to its prevalence in most of the consumer products. Thus, there is continued investigation and ongoing research to determine the potential health hazards of these group of chemicals.
This substance is listed on the positive list of the EU regulation 10/2011 for plastics intended to come into contact with food. Find all available reference materials for compounds listed in 10/2011 here

Application

Dimethyl isophthalate may be used as an internal standard for determining, dimethyl-tere-phthalate (DMtP), dimethyl-phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) in soil samples and biosolids using gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It may also be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in complex matrices including plastics, cosmetics, and environmental samples using gas chromatography coupled to positive chemical ionization mass spectrometry (GC-CIMS).
