Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride solution (80% in H2O) has been used as a reducing agent and stabilizing ligand for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) from gold(III) chloride trihydrate (HAuCl4.3H2O).[1][2] It is a tetra-functional, amine-reactive, aqueous crosslinker that can be used for tuning the properties of protein-based hydrogels for 3D cell encapsulation applications.[3]

    1. For this compound, the Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium ion is the cation, and the chloride ion is the anion. Since the Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium ion is the more "interesting" part of this compound, one might see it referred to in the chemical literature as a cationic crosslinker or a cationic ligand.

    Great reagent for synthesis

    This product is very versatile for making so many derivatives. It is one of my favorite phosphines. Affordable and intriguing, like a fine wine.
