General description

Transferrin is an 80 kDa serum glycoprotein, which has an half-life of 8 to 10 days. The gene is located on human chromosome 3q22.1. Transferrin is expressed in hepatocytes.

Application

Transferrin has been used:
  • in isolation of epidermal stem cells and cell expansion
  • to study the effect of compound treatment on transferrin uptake
  • for transferrin uptake and confocal imaging

Biochem/physiol Actions

Transferrin facilitates the transfer of iron to erythron and peripheral tissues. Mutations in this gene is associated with atransferrinemia. Transferrin is required for fetal development. It is non immunogenic and transferrin-conjugated drugs inhibits cardiotoxicity and drug resistance.
Transferrin was shown to promote the proliferation of human lymphocytes. This effect is directly proportional to the level of iron present.
