General description

Thiourea is a chaotrope used together with urea in the IPG strip rehydration to solubilize and denature proteins, and improve the solubility of membrane proteins.

Application

Thiourea has been used as a component of lysis buffer for solubilization of the proteins from tissue samples and T-leukemia cells. It has also been used as a component of sample buffer for placental tissue, leaf proteome, and 2D electrophoresis.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Thiourea is an organic compound and its derivatives have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and insecticidal property. It is actively used in the drug development against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C infection. Thiourea inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme and effectively reduces prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane (TXB2) production and is antithrombotic in human platelets. It is cytotoxic to vaginal epithelial cells and may function as potent spermicidal agent. Thiourea based derivatives of anticancer drug sorafenib, eliclits antiproliferative activity in human colon cancer cell line, HCT116 cells.
