General description
4ME 16:0 Diether PC or 1,2-di-O-phytanyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is an archaeal phospholipid having two phytane chains attached to the sn-1 and sn-2 positions of the glycerol backbone by ether bonds. It has choline as the alcohol moiety, attached to the phosphate group.
Application
4ME 16:0 Diether PC or 1,2-di-O-phytanyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine is suitable for the preparation of multilamellar and giant lipid vesicles. It has also been used as a standard to analyze and compare the archaeal abundances in microbial communities based on the phosphoether lipids (PEL) concentrations.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Ether lipids are components of membrane structure, influencing the fluidity and fusion of biological membranes. They possess antioxidative action and helps reducing oxidative stress. Cell differentiation and cellular signalling are some of the other physiological processes controlled by ether lipids.

Marine sediments of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, harbor microbial communities that play a significant role in the decomposition, mineralization, and recycling of organic carbon (OC). In this study, the cell densities within a 153-cm sediment core from the Ross Sea

It is now well established that cell membranes are much more than a barrier that separate the cytoplasm from the outside world. Regarding membrane's lipids and their self-assembling, the system is highly complex, for example, the cell membrane needs to

In-plane lipid organization and phase separation in natural membranes play key roles in regulating many cellular processes. Highly cooperative, first-order phase transitions in model membranes consisting of few lipid components are well understood and readily detectable via calorimetry, densitometry, and

As variance from standard phospholipids of eubacteria and eukaryotes, archaebacterial diether phospholipids contain branched alcohol chains (phytanol) linked to glycerol exclusively with ether bonds. Giant vesicles (GVs) constituted of different species of archaebacterial diether phospholipids and glycolipids (archaeosomes) were prepared
