Gene Information

human ... SLN(6588)

General description

Sarcolipin (SLN) is a multidomain protein containing lumenal, cytoplasmic, and transmembrane domains. It is found in the membrane of the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum of cardiac cells, and is involved in maintaining calcium homestasis underlying muscle contractility in the heart. Sarcoplipin achieves these effects through its regulation of the sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA2a), a calcium transport protein that actively pumps calcium from the cytoplasm into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, resulting in relaxation of the heart muscles. Sarcolipin may also interact with phospholamban, and may contribute to heart failure.

Immunogen

KLH-conjugated linear peptide corresponding to the C-terminus of human Sarcolipin.

Studies in sarcolipin knockout mice have led to the suggestion that skeletal muscle sarcolipin plays a role in thermogenesis. The mechanism proposed is uncoupling of the sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium pump. However, in other work sarcolipin was not detected in mouse
