General description

Divinylbenzene (DVB) consists of a combination of meta and para isomers of DVB and ethylvinylbenzene. It can be used as a monomer for the preparation of linear polydivinylbenzene by anionic polymerization.
Divinylbenzene (DVB) is a bis unsaturated monomer. DVB along with styrene as a co monomer is used in producing cross linked polymers. Several examples have reported. Polymerization with high concentrations of DVB produces popcorn polymers.

Application

DVB can be co-polymerized with sulfur due to its high reactivity. It can be used as a cathode material in lithium-sulfur batteries. It can also be used as a cross-linker that increases the rigidity and reduces the template leakage of the molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs). DVB can be polymerized to form poly(divinylbenzene) that can be carbonized to fabricate activated carbon monoliths.
DVB is used in polymeric core shell nanoparticles and as a crosslinking agent. DVB may be used as a monomer for the synthesis of highly crosslinked macroporous styrene/DVB polymers. It may also be used to synthesize monodispersed poly-DVB microspheres.
