General description

Minimum Essential Medium Eagle (MEM) is a synthetic cell culture media, developed by Harry Eagle. It has higher concentrations of amino acids so the medium more closely approximates the protein composition of cultured mammalian cells. Optional supplementation of non-essential amino acids to the formulations that incorporate either Hanks′ or Earle′s salts has enhanced the uses of this medium. This formulation has been further modified by the optional elimination of calcium to permit the growth of cells in suspension culture. MEM can be used for the cultivation of a wide variety of cells grown in monolayers.

Application

Minimum Essential Medium Eagle has been used to culture:
  • HeLa cells
  • Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells
  • chondrosarcoma cell line

This medium may be preferred for the growth of adherent cells in the presence of reduced serum or as a base for the development of a serum-free medium.

Reconstitution

Supplement with 0.292 g/L L-glutamine.
