Analysis Note
Phthalate esters are commonly used as plasticizers and additives for various materials. In the case of some fragrances, diethyl phthalate is used as a solvent and deluent. Rising concern with the potential health effects of exposure to phthalate esters has lead to some controversy over their use in fragrances and other personal care products. This application illustrates the use of GC-MS to analyze a cologne sample that has been spiked at 100 ug/ml with a list of phthalate esters. The unspiked sample was found to contain diethyl phthalate.
The SLB-5ms column was chosen for the analysis due to its low bleed/MS compatibility. The nonpolar character of the phase resulted in elution of the lower boiling constituents in the cologne sample prior to most of the phthalate esters. A 20 m x 0.18 mm ID x 0.18 μm column was used to reduce overall analysis time.
