The WNK1 (WNK lysine deficient protein kinase 1) gene is mapped to human chromosome 12p13.33. The encoded protein belongs to the WNK kinase family and is ubiquitously expressed.

Biochem/physiol Actions
WNK1 (WNK lysine deficient protein kinase 1) is responsible for maintaining the ion homeostasis. It regulates mitogen-activated protein kinase 7 (MAPK7) mediated cell proliferation and migration. It is also known to promote tumor proliferation, invasion and metastasis in prostate carcinoma. WNK1 expression is essential for vascular remodeling and endothelial sprouting. Autophagy has been indicated in various diseases. This intracellular degradation pathway is prevented by WNK1.(3)
