General description
Elastin is a key protein of the extracellular matrix (ECM). It is made up of glycoproteins, glycosaminoglycans, collagen and proteoglycans. Elastin is mainly localized in the arteries and lungs.
Elastin is an important extracellular matrix (ECM) protein derived from its precursor tropoelastin. Elastin is highly flexible than collagen.
Application
Elastin mouse lung has been used as an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein for coating of plates.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Elastin delivers elasticity to tissues and organs. In addition, it is also involved in paracrine signaling. Genetic variation in the gene coding for elastin causes Williams-Beuren syndrome, cutis laxa and supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS).
Elastin plays a critical role in alveolization in the fetal lung. In vivo radiochemical labelling indicates that mouse or rat lung elastin is synthesized primarily prenatally and during the first two weeks of life. It turns over very slowly, with a half-life estimated at several years.
Elastin plays an important role in the elasticity and resilience of many tissues, such as ligament, tendon and elastic cartilage. It is also involved in the elasticity of large arteries and skin.
Preparation Note
Purified under mild extraction conditions to minimize peptide bond cleavage as described by Starcher, et al.

Mechanical forces generated in utero by repetitive breathing-like movements and by fluid distension are critical for normal lung development. A key component of lung development is the differentiation of alveolar type II epithelial cells, the major source of pulmonary surfactant.

A characteristic feature of liver cirrhosis is the accumulation of large amounts of connective tissue with the prevailing content of type I collagen. Elastin is a minor connective tissue component in normal liver but it is actively synthesized by hepatic
