Description

General description

Sodium periodate (sodium (meta)periodate) supported on silica gel is a solid supported reagent.[1] It may be synthesized by adding silica gel to hot aqueous solution of sodium metaperiodate and evaporating to dryness followed by vigorous swirling and shaking.[2]

Application

Sodium periodate (sodium (meta)periodate) supported on silica gel may be used in the following reactions:

• Oxidative cleavage of glycols to alkenes[3] and 1,2-diols to aldehydes.[4]
• Phthalimide N-oxyl (PINO) radical generation from N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI).[5]
• Selective oxidation of sulfides by microwave thermolysis process.[6]
• Regeneration of ketones from ketoximes by microwave irradiation under solvent-free conditions.[7]
• Preparation of 2,3-O-isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde.[2]
