General description

The formation mechanism and oxidation route of 3-buten-2-one was studied.

Application

3-Buten-2-one (vinyl ketone) can be used as a substrate in the synthesis of 4-methoxy-butan-2-one by the conjugate addition of methanol. It is also used in the iron(II)-catalyzed alkylation of indoles at the C-3 position. Use of excess of ketone yields 2,3-dialkylated indoles. 3-Buten-2-one was also useful in Micheal acceptor reactions for thiols, indoles, and coumarins.

Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor HO2 formed by pulsed laser photolysis of Cl2-O2-CH3OH-N2 mixtures. On the microsecond time scale, [HO2] exhibited a time dependence consistent with a mechanism in which [HO2] approached equilibrium via HO2 + HO2.CH3OH (3, -3).
