General description

Boric acid is a weak monobasic acid, it accepts OH- ions, hence is a Lewis acid. In boric acid, B is sp2 hybridized, forming a planar triangle structure. The principal oxide of boron, B2O3, is obtained as a vitreous solid by dehydration of boric acid at red heat.

Application

Boric acid can have a large scale use in glass industry as flame retardant, in buffer solutions.
Boric acid finds uses in several areas; such as

  • In glass fibres, to enhance its resistance and color
  • In glazing ceramic wares
  • As a condensing agent, chemical intermediate and as a precursor for preparation of borates and other boron based compounds
  • As a water coolant in nuclear reactors
  • In electrolytic condensers and capacitors 1
