General description
Lufenuron is an insect growth regulator used to control biting and sucking insects and belongs to the group of benzoylphenylurea insecticides. This systemic insecticide is known to be an inhibitor of chitin synthesis in the cuticle of insects. Lufenuron is used for the control of lepidopteran and coleopteran larvae and is extensively applied in cotton, maize, sugar beet, potatoes, grapes, citrus, and ornamentals farms. Lufenuron is also used in veterinary medicine as a flea control treatment and as an anti-fungal agent for dogs and cats.
Lufenuron is not approved for use in European Union (EU) as per Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 (repealing Directive 91/414/EEC). However, the maximum residue level (MRL) for Lufenuron (any ratio of constituent isomers) is set from 0.01 mg/kg to 2 mg/kg for products of plant and animal origin following Reg. (EU) 2020/856. The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) has established an MRL of 0.01 to 0.2 ppm.
Lufenuron has to be monitored in the Multiannual Control Programme for Pesticides Residues (MACP), run within the EU and EFTA in/on products of plant origin.
Application
- Evaluate the dissipation of lufenuron residues as a function of time and calculate the pre-harvest intervals on treated Chinese cabbages grown under greenhouse conditions
- Determine the effect of lufenuron exposure on different health biomarkers of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)
- Examine the effects of chitin-synthesis interruption during the development and reproduction of Drosophila melanogaster when administered with lufenuron
- Study the effects of lufenuron on the development and mortality of Lobesia botrana eggs and larvae and also on adult fecundity, fertility, and longevity
- Investigate the presence of chitin in ovaries of Rhodnius prolixus and study the effect of lufenuron on oogenesis and egg-laying
