General description

Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C) counts as an essential quality characteristic in many foods. The content of ascorbic acid is measured during the production and filling procedures in the fruit- and vegetable-processing sector as a measure to guarantee compliance of the minimum required values for preservation. The Reflectoquant Ascorbic acid test strips are suitable for quickly measuring levels of natural ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid reduces yellow molybdophosphoric acid to phosphormolybdenum blue that is deter mined reflectometrically on the RQflex® 20. For pre-testing a sample in an economic and quick way to estimate the ascorbic acid concentration and a possible dilution factor prior to using this quantitative method we recommend our semi-quantitative MQuant test strips for ascorbic acid.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. Please provide details on the differences between the RQflex® Reflectoquant® 20 and 10 models for the system suitability test for Ascorbic acid. Specifically, are the "<25" and "LO" readings equivalent, and what was the "LO" limit on the 10 model?

    1 answer
    1. The reason for the RQ Flex 10 displaying "LO" is that the concentration falls below the measurement range of the strips. This is essentially equivalent to "<25" displayed on the RQ Flex 20, as the only ascorbic test strips available have a measuring range of 25 - 450 mg/l Reflectoquant®. If "<25," it means the concentration is lower than the strip's analyte range or outside the detection limit. The measuring range for this assay has not changed from the old RQ Flex 10 to the new RQ Flex 20 strips.

  2. What type of filter paper is needed to run ascorbic acid on red juices, as the application note doesn't specify?

    1 answer
    1. The recommended filters for this purpose are simple folded filters, for instance, Whatman® prepleated qualitative filter paper, Grade 1573 1/2. Other equivalent filters may also be suitable for use.
