Mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) is a key adaptor molecule in the innate immune response to viral infection. It is characterized by a caspase activation and recruitment domain (CARD) at its N-terminus, a proline-rich region, and a C-terminal transmembrane domain that anchors it to the outer mitochondrial membrane. The CARD domain is crucial for its interaction with other CARD-containing proteins like RIG-I and MDA5, which detect viral RNA. MAVS plays a role the signal transduction from RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs) that recognize viral RNA, leading to the activation of transcription factors such as NF- B and IRFs (Interferon Regulatory Factors).
