The 1 µm polystyrene-based magnetic particles (estd. material density 2.2 g/mL), the calculated particle number is 4.3x10^10 per 1 ml of the 5 % w/v aqueous suspension.
The particles consist of a porous polystyrene matrix, the pores of which are filled with nanoparticulate iron oxide rendering it paramagnetic.
To prevent leakage of iron oxide to the surrounding medium, the bead surface is sealed by a carboxyl polymer. However, these COOH-groups are not accessible for any ligands and are not suited for coupling reactions of sorts. For the latter purpose, we keep a series of additionally COOH-functionalized types.
