Gene Information

rat ... Kcnh8(246325)

General description

Kv12.1 channel is confined mainly to the central nervous system with some expression in peripheral organs such as testis, colon and lung. The physiological function of the Kv12.1 channel hasn′t been established, although a role in the modulation of overall excitability of neurons has been suggested.
The gene Kcnh8 (potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 8), also referred to as Elk1/Ets-1, belongs to the Ets family of transcription factors. The members of this subfamily are part of the ether-a-go-go (EAG) family of potassium channel pore-forming subunits. The rat elk mRNA is found to be expressed in brain. The rat elk subunits contain six hydrophobic membrane-spanning segments S1-S6, a P-domain, and a motif homologous to cyclic nucleotide-binding domains at the C-terminus.

Immunogen

peptide EDKKEDRAKGRSRAG(C) corresponding to amino acid residues 143-157 of rat KV12.1.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The gene Kcnh8 (potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily H member 8) encodes a potassium channel pore-forming subunit that activates p21WAF1/Cip1 via cis-acting elements in p21WAF1/Cip1 and inhibits apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells. The potassium channel is found to mediate slowly activating sustained potassium currents.

Physical form

Lyophilized from phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 1% BSA and 0.025% sodium azide.

Preparation Note

Reconstitute the lyophilized vial with 50 μL or 200 μL deionized water, depending on package size. Further dilutions should be made using a carrier protein such as BSA (1-3%).
