General description

Carboxypeptidase M (UniProt: D4A9Q5; also known as CPM) is encoded by the Cpm gene (Gene ID: 314855) in rat. Rat CPM a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored metallo-carboxypeptidase that cleaves basic carboxyl-terminal amino acids from various peptides at neutral pH. Rat CPM is synthesized with a signal peptide (aa 1-17), which is subsequently cleaved off to generate the mature form. The mature CPM displays high specificity and cleaves only C-terminal arginine or lysine residues in a variety of peptide substrates. It is shown to be expressed in the lung and placenta at high levels. Its expression is detected in alveolar cells lacking T1alpha, a type I cell marker protein found in adult lung. Carboxypeptidase M also serves as a macrophage differentiation marker, which is preferentially induced in epithelioid cells of all granuloma types studied, but not in resting macrophages. Hence, it can be employed for detection of minute granuloma even in the presence of non-granulomatous macrophages. Clone 7F9 recognizes CPM expressed in late embryonic rat lung to postnatal day 1.
