General description

Ceramide is one of the products of sphingolipid metabolism. The ceramides differ in their acyl chain length.

Application

C8 PEG750 Ceramide has been used in ceramide liposome formulation to test a method for pH-dependent fusion between liposomes and cellular membranes using a pH low insertion peptide. It is also suitable for use in nanoliposomal formulation.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Poly-ethylene glycol (PEG) conjugated to ceramides are applicable as liposomal carriers, enclosing drug molecules. They are known to increase the circulation longevity of the drug due to its neutral surface electrostatic charge. This is inferred to decrease the negative surface charge of the liposomes preventing the release of positively charged encapsulated drug molecule.
