General description

Penicillin, a β-lactam antibiotic is extremely active towards bacteria. Penicillins are also termed as penams. It is naturally occurring and has a bicyclic skeleton. Streptomycin is a pseudotrisaccharide. It comprises of a monosubstituted aminocyclitol.

Application

Penicillin-Streptomycin has been used:
  • as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium (DMEM) to maintain the Huh7 liver hepatoma cell line
  • as a supplement in Roswell park memorial institute-1640 (RPMI) medium to maintain mouse lymphoma YAC-1 cells
  • as a component in minimum essential medium Eagle to treat individual mouse spleens for the preparation of splenocytes
  • as a supplement in FMX-8 complete medium to culture Chinese hamster ovary cells

Recommended for use in cell culture media at 20 ml/L.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Penicillins can prevent the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. This antibiotic can be used in the treatment of skin and urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory infections, and endocarditis. Streptomycin can block Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. Streptomycin inhibits prokaryote protein synthesis by preventing the transition from initiation complex to chain-elongating ribosome, causing miscoding.

Components

This product is formulated to contain 5,000 units penicillin and 5 mg streptomycin/mL solubilized in a proprietary citrate buffer.
