General description

NGFβ (nerve growth factor β) is a protein involved in signal transduction, and expressed by multiple tissues such as placenta, urothelium and bladder smooth muscle cells. It is a neurotrophin and belongs to the NGF family.

Application

NGF-β from rat is used for the following applications:
  • In the preparation of DMEM medium (for the cultivation and differentiation of PC12 cells)
  • Western blotting analysis
  • For the preparation of differentiation medium (it is prepared from DMEM, in which NGF-β is one of the components)
  • In cell culture and treatment (for neuronal differentiation)
  • In the preparation of stock solution

Biochem/physiol Actions

NGFβ (nerve growth factor β) is essential for the differentiation and survival of neurons. It also plays a key role in the development and maintenance of nervous system. It is also involved in angiogenesis, and facilitates tumorigenesis such as, oral, breast and prostate cancers. It has potential as marker for the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS) and overactive bladder (OAB), and might also aid in determining the therapy for the same. It might be involved in changes in placental function, as NGF signaling is influenced by antenatal depression and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment.

Physical form

Lyophilized from a 0.2 μm filtered solution in PBS and 1 M NaCl containing 50 μg of bovine serum albumin per 1 μg of cytokine

Analysis Note

The biological activity is measured in a cell proliferation assay using the factor-dependent human erythroleukemic cell line, TF-1.
