Terbufos is an organophosphate insecticide and nematicide that acts as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor. It irreversibly binds to the acetylcholine binding site and blocks the hydrolysis of acetylcholine, causing hyperexcitation. It is used to control soil-dwelling arthropods, such as Diabrotica spp. larvae, Tetanops myopaeformis, Delia spp., diplopoda, symphyla, and elateridae in crops of maize, sugar beets cabbages, and onions. Terbufos is also used against nematodes including Radopholus similis, Meloidogyne incognita, and Helicotylenchus spp. in bananas and Ditylenchus dipsaci in sugar beets.
According to the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 2076/2002 of 20th November 2002, terbufos is not approved for use in the European Union (EU) as a plant protection agent, following the Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. But default maximum residue limit of 0.01 mg/kg has been set for the presence of terbufos in products of plant and animal origin, according to the Reg (EC) No 149/2008.

Application

The certified reference material (CRM) is intended to be used as a calibrant for chromatography and other analytical techniques.
Terbufos CRM may also be used as given below:
  • Multi-residue analysis of 160 multiclass pesticides using ethyl acetate (EtAC)/n. hexane mixture for extraction from chamomile, thyme, and marjoram samples and their analysis by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS)
  • Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) analysis of 243 pesticides in cardamom samples after evaluation of 4 different sample extraction methods for an optimized extraction
  • Detection of 54 pesticide residues in 48 pollen samples by QuEChERS extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
  • QuEChERS based sample preparation of 44 batches of Pogostemon cablin and related products for the determination of 44 organophosphorous pesticide (OPP) residues by gas chromatography coupled with flame photometric detection (GC-FPD)
  • Development of clean-up method by combining gas-liquid microextraction (GLME) with magnetic-assisted-dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) to analyze multiple pesticide residues in fatty foods of animal origin by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Trace analysis of 160 pesticides in 50 honeybee wax combs samples by gas chromatography combined with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry for quantitation, following a QuEChERS-based method for extraction
