General description

4′-(Pentyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5-OCB) liquid crystals are the member of the oxycyanobiphenyl family. It exhibits liquid crystalline phase in the temperature range of 47-67.5oC. Crystal and molecular structure of 5-OCB was reported. The crystals belong to the monoclinic system (a=21.378, b=5.695, c=12.789Å). The 5-OCB molecules are antiparallel in layers. H NMR of the phase transitions has been studied.

Application

5-OCB may be used in indicators and storage devices.
