General description

Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is a hydrophilic protein that is expressed mainly in oligodendrocytes. It has a pivotal role in myelination of nervous system, signaling pathways prior to myelination and remyelination processes after neural injury. Anti-myelin basic protein (MBP) antibody can be used in western blotting and flow cytometry. Rabbit anti-myelin basic protein antibody reacts specifically with myelin basic protein of mouse, rat and human.
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is an 18.5kDa protein encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 18q22qter. MBP is a major component of the myelin sheath and is highly expressed in central nervous system (CNS).

Immunogen

synthetic peptide corresponding to residues 102-116 of human Myelin Basic Protein.

Application

Anti-Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) antibody produced in rabbit has been used in:
  • indirect immunolabeling
  • immunohistochemistry.
  • Western Blotting.
Anti-myelin basic protein (MBP) antibody (diluted 1:200) can be used as a primary antibody in double fluorescence labeling. It can also be used to detect myelin basic protein using immunoblotting.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Myelin basic protein (MBP) plays a vital role in formation of myelin sheath and is associated with the various neurological disorders. MBP functions as an antigenic target in autoimmune disease experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE). MBP plays an essential role in cytoskeletal turnover and membrane extension. Additionally, it is also involved in Fyn-mediated signaling pathways, sequestration of phosphoinositides and regulation of calcium homoeostasis. MBP functions as an in vitro substrate for mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP) kinase and aids in the purification and functional studies of enzyme.

Physical form

solution in phosphate buffered saline, containing 0.02% sodium azide.
