General description

Ethyl ether (CH3CH2)2O is also referred to as sulfuric ether, diethyl ether, or just ether is used as a laboratory solvent. Ether is a desirable solvent for oils, fats, waxes, perfumes, dyes, resins, hydrocarbons, and gums. It is also used as fuel and to synthesize other chemical compounds.

Application

Ethyl ether can be used as:
  • A solvent in organic reactions such as Grignard and Wurtz reactions.
  • A solvent along with lithium perchlorate (LPDE) in the reductive monoalkylation of amines and its derivative with aldehyde.
  • A solvent for the extraction and purification of (L+) lactic acid from fermented broth and synthesize PLA (polylactic acid).
