General description

Anti–inhibin alpha is an antibody against a peptide hormone which has demonstrated utility in the differentiation between adrenal cortical tumors and renal cell carcinoma. Sex cord stromal tumors of the ovary as well as trophoblastc tumors also demonstrate cytoplasmic positivity with this antibody. This antibody has been used to make the differential diagnosis of intrauterine vs. ectopic pregnancy in endometrial curettings.

Using archival material, we studied the immunoreactivity and utility of monoclonal anti-human inhibin alpha subunit in the identification of chorionic villi (CV) and trophoblastic subpopulations in endometrial curettings (EC) from patients who had intra-uterine, ectopic, molar and, particularly, probable intra-uterine

Placental trophoblasts are the primary source of serum inhibin during pregnancy. We sought to characterize inhibin immunolabeling in trophoblastic neoplasms and compare the results with those for established markers of trophoblastic differentiation.
