Gene Information

human ... COL18A1(80781)

General description

Endostatin is a naturally occurring 20kDa polypeptide derived from the C-terminal portion of type XVIII collagen. It functions as an anti-angiogenic cytokine that is expressed in various organs with the highest levels in liver, lung and kidney. The gene encoding it is localized on human chromosome 21q22.3. Anti-Collagen α1 XVIII Antibody detects endogenous levels of total Collagen α1 XVIII protein.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human Collagen alpha1 XVIII.

Immunogen Range: 1301-1350

Biochem/physiol Actions

Endostatin inhibits the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells. It blocks apoptosis of cells and G1 to S phase transition in the cell cycle. It inhibits angiogenesis by blocking the pro-angiogenic activities of VEGF and FGF-basic. Mutations in this gene lead to Knobloch Syndrome (KS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder.

Collagen XVIII, a proteoglycan, is a component of basement membranes (BMs). There are three distinct isoforms that differ only by their N-terminal, but with a specific pattern of tissue and developmental expression. Cleavage of its C-terminal produces endostatin, an inhibitor
