Cell Line Origin

Monkey African green kidney, SV40 transformed

Cell Line Description

Derived from CV-1 simian cells transformed by origin-defective mutant of SV40 which codes for wildtype T Ag. Possible host for propagation of pure populations of recombinant SV40 virus. The cells should be handled under laboratory containment level 2.

Application

COS-1 cell line has been used to test the toxicity of various concentrations of iron oxide nanoparticles (for use in medical diagnostics). It has also been used to study the interaction of nanoparticles with their cellular targets.
Virus replication studies: SV40

Culture Medium

DMEM (D6546) + 2 mM L-Glutamine (G7513) + 10% FBS / FCS (F2442).

Subculture Routine

Split semi-confluent cultures 1:3 to 1:6, i.e., seeding at 2-4x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37 °C. In order to prevent syncitia formation, do not allow cells become confluent.
