General description

Iodine is a micro nutrient essential for thyroid synthesis. It is a component of Gram′s iodine which has been reported to be used in identifying cellulase-producing microorganisms. Photogeneration of iodine from anatase TiO2 has been studied.

Application

Iodine may be used as a promoter during the synthesis of conjugated molecules with benzofulvene core. It may be employed as a TLC stain for detection of perillyl alcohol.
It may be used as a catalyst in the synthesis of the following:
  • Quinoxalines by reacting 1,2-diamines with 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds under microwave condition.
  • N-Substituted pyrroles via condensation of 2,5-dimethoxy tetrahydrofuran with amines under microwave condition.
  • Disulfidation of alkenes.
