Application

Dithiothreitol, 1M may be used as a reducing agent in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) loading buffer. It may also be used as a reagent in saliva sterilization.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dithiothreitol (DTT), also known as Cleland′s reagent, is a reducing agent containing two thiol functional groups. It serves as a protective regent for thiol groups in protein chemistry studies. DTT is used in chemical peptide synthesis for reducing disulfide bonds in various substrates such as glutathione, proteins, and other macromolecules. It is also used as a mucolytic agent during sputum processing.
