General description

Gelrite, gellan gum, is recommended as a gelling agent for use in place of agar in microbiological assay and tissue culture media. Gellan gum is used in a wide variety of immobilization matrices. It forms a hard gel at low concentrations in the presence of an electrolyte. Gellan is a linear tetrasaccharide composed of D-glucose, L-rhamnose, and D-glucuronic acid in the ratio of 2:1:1, linked by β (1 → 4) glycosidic bond.

Questions

1–10 of 11 Questions
  1. Does Gellan Gum/Gelrite have Iron, Manganese and Zinc in trace amount? It would be great to have the specific concentration detected. Thank you.

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, the levels of Iron, Manganese and Zinc are not analyzed for this product.

  2. How many grams per liter of Product G1910, Gelzan™ CM are recommended for plant tissue culture?

    1 answer
    1. Gelzan™ CM is typically used at a concentration of 2-4 grams per liter.

      Helpful?

    1 answer
    1. The purity of this gelling agent is not determined. This material is a complex polysaccharide comprised of glucose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid in the approximate molar ratio of 2:1:1. In addition to the base components, historical ICP analysis shows trace amounts of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphate, and Sodium. The maximum moisture content for this product is 16%. 4. How do I use Product G1910, Gelzan™ CM?

    1 answer
    1. The G1910 is added to well-stirred water, and the dispersion heated to 85-90°C to ensure full hydration. To form a gel, the necessary amount of electrolyte, such as potassium citrate or calcium chloride, is added to the solution at 85°C and the mixture is poured or pumped into containers and allowed to cool undisturbed. The product is biodegradable, so a biocide is recommended. The typical use level is 0.2 to 2.0%.

      Helpful?

  5. Is Product G1910, Gelzan™ CM, different that Gelrite?

    1 answer
    1. The G1910 is chemically the same as Gelrite, which is no longer produced. Both items are trademarked to CP Kelco U.S., Inc. They are both Gellan Gum, but the manufacturer has different specifications for these items.
