General description

Boric anhydride (Boron trioxide) is a colorless glassy hygroscopic mass having rhombic crystals. Its dissolution in water is a highly exothermic reaction and orthoboric acid is formed. It can be prepared by heating boric acid. It is used as flux in metallurgical processes. It has been reported as an inhibitor of crystallization.

Application

Boric anhydride can be used as a boron precursor to synthesize:
  • Boron carbon nitride nanosheet (BCN) by thermal condensation reaction with urea and melamine.
  • Boron-doped reduced graphene oxide (B-rGO) via a chemical vapor deposition method.
It can also be used as an additive along with pinacol to synthesize 4-alkoxy-5-hydroxy-2-pentenoate derivatives by Pd-catalyzed reaction of α, β-unsaturated γ, δ-epoxy esters with various alcohols.
