General description
A novel quaternary pyridinium poly-amino acid present in elastin. Suggested to be responsible for the cross-linking of elastin leading to the formation of insoluble fibers. Urinary excretion of desmosine is a useful indicator of elastin breakdown resulting from increased elastase activity.
