General description
Research area: CELL SIGNALING
Native angiotensinogen from human plasma is an α2-globulin present in plasma at about 7 mg/100 ml.
Angiotensinogen serves as a precursor for the production of angiotensin. In humans, angiotensinogen is composed of 485 amino acids. It is primarily synthesized and continuously secreted by the liver.

Application
Angiotensinogen has been used for the detection and analysis of the complexes formed between angiotensinogen and proform of eosinophil major basic protein (ProMBP) in both serum and amniotic fluid during pregnancy through ELISA.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Angiotensinogen acts as a precursor molecule in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway. It is a part of the renin-angiotensin system that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. Moreover, overactivation of the RAAS system has been associated with the development of several types of cancer, cardiovascular and renal diseases. Furthermore, in certain cancers angiotensin II has been shown to promote cancer metastasis.
